Founded in 1697, it was settled by the early Quakers and originally named Maidenhead, a small village across the Thames River in London. In 1812, it was renamed Lawrence after the bravery of captain James Lawrence’s during the War of 1812.
 
The town consists of a village in the center known as Lawrenceville, which includes a historic district that was recognized by the National Register of Historical Places in 1972, one of the first towns to do so. In the center of the village is The Lawrenceville School, a top 5 private school in the nation.
