Township Overview

One of the oldest and most historic towns in New Jersey (the first recorded evidence of the town is a deed of sale in 1698), Cranbury served as a strategic location and meeting site during the Revolutionary War. A home here housed Alexander Hamilton and was used by George Washington to plan the Battle of Monmouth, a major victory and turning point of the war.

Today, the entire downtown is a historic district and has been labeled by the National Register of Historic Places as the “best preserved 19th century village in Middlesex County. While these are many small towns in New Jersey, few are in such an undisturbed environment as that of Cranbury”.
